Windows Defender is anti-spyware only. You can use it with most any anti-virus program.

Nod32 is good.
Instead of windows defender, use Microsoft Security Essentials, its free, and you get it from microsoft.
NOTE: Do not download software that says it comes from microsoft, unless you are getting it from microsoft.com

I use Norton Internet Security and just upgraded to the 2010 version. Have used Norton for yrs. with no problems or bad bugs/virus/malware/spyware. It run with out a problem along with Windows Defender. I see a lot of free virus programs and sure some or OK but in my opinion you get what you pay for as some of these free programs do not update the virus definitions or run the scans on a set schedule. Never install two virus or Internet Security programs as there will be a conflict between the software/programs.

Windows defender is part of the windows operating system. It is designed to run with all antivirus software’s. It is not an antivirus program. It is for malacious software removal(malware/spyware), although it doesn’t
work very well. Suggest malwarebytes.org and superantispyware.com to supplement your no32 to keep you safe!!

Don’t let anyone talk you into downloading AVG free. It’s the sorriest AV on the net. It has no root kit protection. That in it’s self makes it worthless. I’ve never used Nod32. But i have heard good things about it. Windows Defender is about a useless as tits on a boar hog. Lose it. If you want something to back up Nod32 get Mal Ware bytes anti mal ware & Super Anti Spy ware. But don’t expect much because there free. As a matter of fact don’t expect much from any free soft ware.
(EDIT)
ED G is right. I’m using returnil right now. Downloaded it tonight. So far on this computer, my test machine, with windows 2000 on it, It works great. I have been to every nasty porn site i could find. Tonight so far i know i have been hit at least 10 times with mal ware, trojans and you name it. I just rebooted and started all over. All infections gone. I have lime wire on this machine. I purposely downloaded music that i thought might be infected. Sure enough it was. All infections are gone. The only draw back is it will delete everything. Whatever music you downloaded, Whatever porn you downloaded will be gone. Right along with the infection.
So if you do like most on here do, Click on everything you see, Download whatever crosses your mind. Then you should be good to go. This program is for absolute computer dummies. From what i see on here there are a lot of folks out there that should have it. At least if you have this on your machine while your learning about the internet and how dangerous it really is, Well, It’s worth the 35 bucks in the long run. Especially for the computer dummies that are always getting hit.

If you want better protection Keep Nod turn off windows defender. Then get Returnil. They have a free version. You will not have to worry about trojans, viruses, or spyware. When you turn on Returnil your computer will be running in a Virtual environment. If something is not caught by Nod all you have to do is restart your computer. This is the way to stay malware free, never let malware get a foot hold on your computer. Most user don’t understand how a virtual machine works, it’s actually very easy. Install it, do what ever you want online. When done just restart you computer.
